National leader in quality and patient safety tapped as
Tufts Medical Center’s new Chief Medical Officer
Tufts Medical Center has appointed Saul N. Weingart, MD, PhD of Newton, Mass. as its next Chief Medical Officer. Weingart is a nationally renowned leader in the movement to improve hospital quality, currently serving as Vice President for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. He recently received one of the highest quality awards in the country, the John Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality from the National Quality Forum and The Joint Commission. |

Tufts Medical Center researchers identify several new genes linked to Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Tufts Medical Center researchers and collaborators have found seven new genetic locations with genome-wide statistical significance that increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in people over age 65. One of these seven genes, COL8A1, was previously reported to be associated with AMD by the Tufts Medical Center team in 2010 and 2011. |

January 22, 2013 Tufts Medical Center Ranks First in Massachusetts in Adult Heart Transplants Tufts Medical Center’s 17 adult heart transplants in 2012 were the most of any hospital in Massachusetts, according to statistics supplied by New England Organ Bank (NEOB). Tufts MC now has performed a total of 103 heart transplants over the past five years (2008-2012), more than any other hospital in New England. |

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Announces Award
to Tufts Medical Center to Study Screening and Treatment Options for Adolescents with High Cholesterol
Laurel K. Leslie, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children will receive a research award estimated at nearly $1 million to study comparative effectiveness of lipid screening and treatment strategies for adolescents with high cholesterol from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute. The project is part of a portfolio of patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research that addresses PCORI’s National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda |
