Tufts Medical Center to Conduct Live “Webcast” of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery
Boston, Mass. – Tufts Medical Center and OR-Live will conduct a live webcast of a laparoscopic gastric bypass operation on Wednesday, December 6, at 6:30 p.m. The US National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus.gov website will simulcast the event live.
Scott Shikora, MD, Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and Surgical Director of the Medical Center’s comprehensive Obesity Consultation Center, along with bariatric surgeons Michael Tarnoff, MD, and Julie Kim, MD, will perform the surgery. Tufts Medical Center was the first medical center in New England to do this “gold standard” obesity surgery using minimally invasive techniques. The Medical Center’s surgeons remain the most experienced in the region, with outcomes more favorable than the national average.
The Bariatric Surgery team is also an integral part of Tufts Medical Center’s Obesity Consultation Center, which offers integrated, multidisciplinary care for patients battling obesity. The American Society of Bariatric Surgery recognizes the OCC as a Center of Excellence. In addition to obesity surgery, the OCC provides nutritional, medical, behavioral and exercise components – all as part of its comprehensive program to help patients achieve and maintain substantial weight loss.
The webcast will feature live Internet transmission of the procedure, as well as interviews with Dr. Shikora, other members of the OCC clinical staff and both past and prospective OCC bariatric surgery patients. Viewers can also e-mail questions to the surgeons during the Webcast. The webcast can be viewed from any non-Tufts Medical Center computer with Internet access.
