Pediatric Emergency Department Offers Wait Times of 30 Minutes or Less
Boston, Mass. -- Floating Hospital for Children’s pediatric emergency department, provides specialty and subspecialty pediatric care, tailored to meet the special needs of children and referring pediatricians. The Floating Hospital’s Pediatric ED at Tufts Medical Center is taking a new approach to emergency care by dramatically reducing wait times to see a doctor - often to 30 minutes or less.
Ronald Ruffing, MD, board certified in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, oversees the unit as Director of Emergency Services for Children. Joining Ruffing is Pediatric Emergency Physician Matthew Trokel, MD, as well as Emergency Physicians John Collins, MD, Kevin King, MD and Yesha Patel, MD.
“The facility, designed specifically for pediatric emergency services, significantly reduces wait times while placing a special emphasis on children and their needs,” said Ruffing. “Children often enter the emergency department scared with an injury or illness, we treat and care for them, and then their tears give way to smiles.”
The Floating Pedi ED is dedicated to providing care with a family-centered, personalized approach. Child life specialists make an unexpected trip to the Emergency Department less frightening for many young patients. The specialists are trained to identify and address the needs of children during visits, using play and relaxation techniques. Adding this component of care makes the experience a positive one for patients and their families.
Floating Hospital’s Pediatric ED is also home to the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, a Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center certified by the American College of Surgeons. Children are transported by ground or air ambulance to the Emergency Department where multidisciplinary teams can treat any illness or injury. Floating Hospital’s expert staff of more than 75 pediatric specialists is also readily available. A state-of-the-art rooftop helipad provides easy access to the Emergency Department, Critical Care Units and Operating Rooms.
