New Annals of Internal Medicine study shows low levels of “good cholesterol” pose the same risks to patients regardless of whether or not they are taking statins
Boston, MA – A new study published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that, even in patients treated with statins, low HDL is an important contributor to cardiovascular risk. The study, conducted by Investigators from the Preventive Cardiology Center at Tufts Medical Center, was designed to explore whether statin treatment negates the need to focus on HDL levels in patients at risk for heart disease by comparing the risks posed by low levels of HDL in statin-treated patients vs. non-statin patients. |

Tufts Medical Center Dialysis Clinic Ranked among Top 7 in New England for use of Arteriovenous Fistulas
Tufts Medical Center announced today that DCI Boston, which operates the Tufts MC outpatient dialysis program, has been recognized by the End-Stage Renal Disease Network of New England as one of only seven dialysis facilities, out of 170 in New England to use arteriovenous (AV) fistulas to perform dialysis on more than 70% of its hemodialysis patients. The arteriovenous fistula, constructed from the patient’s own artery and vein, is the best form of access to the circulation for hemodialysis, resulting in better health outcomes and lower health care costs. No other facility in Greater Boston was among the centers recognized. |

October 29, 2010 Southcoast Physicians Network Joins New England Quality Care Alliance New England Quality Care Alliance (NEQCA), the physician network of Tufts Medical Center, today announced the addition of 164 primary care physicians, pediatricians and adult specialists to its network. The physicians are members of Southcoast Physicians Network (SPN), the physician organization of Southcoast Health System. SPN joins NEQCA’s network of nearly 1,600 physicians throughout Eastern Massachusetts. |

Errol R. Norwitz, MD, PhD has been named Chairman of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Ob/Gyn-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. Norwitz is internationally known for his work in maternal-fetal medicine, particularly in the causes and prevention of preeclampsia and pre-term labor. |

To improve emergency care for heart attack patients, new research by Tufts Medical Center investigators suggests that expanding percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) capacity at hospitals is less effective than using emergency medical services (EMS) to transport patients directly to existing PCI centers. |

Floating Hospital and Lawrence General Expand Pediatric Affiliation
New Hospitalist Program to Benefit Pediatric Patients and Pediatricians
LAWRENCE - Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center will begin providing hospital-based pediatricians to Lawrence General Hospital’s 20-bed Pediatric Unit, the two hospitals have announced. The presence of the pediatric hospitalists will ensure that a pediatric inpatient specialist is available at Lawrence General Hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The hospitals plan to launch the service, an expansion of existing services that Floating Hospital provides to Lawrence General, in the fall. |

Major CMS decisions not always a cost-effective use of resources
A Tufts Medical Center study of National Coverage Determinations made by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) shows that CMS is covering a number of treatments that do not appear to be cost-effective. By incorporating cost-effectiveness research in these major decisions, the agency could allocate its resources more efficiently, the study suggests. |
