Interpreter Services

|
Every patient at Tufts Medical Center has the right to an interpreter, at no cost. The Interpreter Services Department guarantees that non-English speaking patients and families are able to communicate with their health care providers to enable seamless delivery of care.
Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children have one of the largest interpreter services departments in the region, with translation services available in over thirty-seven languages. Interpreters handle an average of 3,800 “interpreter encounters” each month.
We are committed to ensuring that patients receive prompt attention and services.
Patients can request an interpreter by asking the secretary on the unit to call 617-636-5547.
At night and on weekends, interpreters are available for emergencies only.

Along with face-to-face intrepretation services, Tufts Medical Center is working with Pacific Interpreters to provide patients with interpretation services over the phone.
All adult and pediatric inpatient floors are now equipped with telephones that have 2 headsets. Care providers can use one headset to dial and request an interpreter; the other headset is for the patient. The provider and patient can then talk face-to-face via the interpreter on the phone.
Wait time for an interpreter over the phone is approximately 15 seconds when using the dual handset phone. Providers are able to care for their patients quickly, resulting in happier and more satisfied patients.
