The Department of Anesthesia at Tufts Medical Center welcomes medical students who are interested in pursuing an elective rotation in clinical anesthesia. The rotation will serve as an introduction to the specialty of anesthesiology under the direct supervision of our anesthesia staff physicians.
The students will participate in and/or observe a variety of anesthetic cases of varied complexities. They will learn about basic preoperative evaluation, standard induction and maintenance techniques, basic airway management and postoperative pain management. There will be exposure to most anesthetic subspecialties, including obstetric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia and pain management.
Students will attend weekly departmental grand rounds and will join residents in their weekly didactic sessions. The students are required to present one case and participate in one oral exam at the end of the rotation. There will be no call requirements or weekend duty. The amount of hands-on experience will vary for each students based on previous experience, degree of skill and interest and availability of appropriate clinical opportunities.

Electives are four weeks long and are available, space permitting, to full-time students in good academic standing. Variation on the rotation dates is not possible.
Visiting students are limited to a maximum of three four-week clerkships. Students remain registered at their own schools while participating in visiting electives. They are not officially enrolled as students of Tufts University.
