Clinical Program Overview
The Tufts Medical Center Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program sets the standard for transplant treatment providing expert care for some of the most challenged patients dealing with complex medical issues. We provide superior patient care and highly effective treatment strategies for all types of bone marrow and stem cell transplants for adults and children. Our nationally recognized transplant team is made up of physicians and nurses who provide individualized, personal courses of therapy to patients throughout their course of care.
- The National Marrow Donor Program recently released its center-specific survival rate report for all bone marrow transplant programs in the United States. Tufts Medical Center’s Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program is classified as treating the highest risk patients (5 on a scale of 1 to 5). Transplant outcomes at the Tufts program rank favorably with similar high risk programs across the country.
- The Medical Center is one of the few centers in the country to offer treatments that harness the immune system. This approach reduces relapse after transplant.
- Our physicians were some of the first to pioneer ‘mini-transplants’ -- transplants that allow older patients or those patients who may not be able to tolerate a ‘full’ transplant to benefit from this treatment.
Accreditation
The Tufts Medical Center Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant program is fully accredited toperform the following types of transplants:
- Syngeneic, autologous and allogeneic from siblings and unrelated donors
- Marrow/peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC)
- Single or double cord
We have also maintained the following long-term accreditations:
- Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)- Our program is the only one in the northeast United States to have been continuously accredited in all aspects of transplant for more than 10 years by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). That sustained accreditation demonstrates our commitment to the field of stem cell transplant and cellular therapy as well as quality patient care.
- National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)- The Tufts Medical Center Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program has been continuously accredited for unrelated blood, bone marrow and cord blood transplants by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) since 1995.
The Tufts Medical Center Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program is also a member of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the MDS Foundation Centers of Excellence organizations.
History
Tufts Medical Center has a richand innovative history. The first bone marrow transplant in Boston was performed at Tufts Medical Center more than 50 years ago. Dr. William Dameshek, one of the fathers of modern hematology and a founder of the American Society of Hematology, introduced this new approach to treating blood borne cancers. What was once cutting edge is now the standard of care, and Tufts Medical Center continues to set the standard in transplant treatment.
Clinical Trials
Our patients have access to novel therapies through participation in both Tufts Medical Center clinical trials and national clinical trials.

Patient Care and Comfort
Tufts Medical Center Bone Marrow Transplant Program emphasizes personalized patient care. You and your family receive individualized attention from a team of health care professionals who work closely together to optimize care.
- The Neely Stem Cell Therapy and Collection Center is state of the art and is conveniently located on the same floor as the outpatient clinic and the inpatient unit.

- The Neely House is a residence where you and your family can stay when undergoing cancer treatments. It is a comfortable and supportive environment close to the hospital. Located within the walls of Tufts Medical Center, it includes 16 beautifully appointed apartments, with two common kitchens and lounge areas. In the 10 years since its opening, more than 4,000 families living with cancer have called The Neely House their "home away from home". After your discharge, the Neely House also allows easy access to outpatient services.

- The Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant program at The Floating Hospital for Children has been performing bone marrow transplants in children for more than 15 years. When a child receives a transplant he or she is cared for in a beautiful new five bed unit dedicated to the care of pediatric patients receiving bone marrow or cord blood transplants. The entire unit is hepa-filtered so that children can walk around freely on the unit without being confined to their rooms. Adjacent to the unit is a living area for parents with full kitchen and laundry facilities.

The care on the unit is second to none. Personalized, comprehensive and compassionate care is provided by 11 full time pediatric transplant nurses, some of whom have over 20 years experience. There are five pediatric attending physicians caring for stem cell transplant recipients. Each physician interacts closely with the adult stem cell transplant team.
