Clinical Program Overview
The Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Cancer Program at the Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center is a comprehensive, multidiscipliniary program. We offer expertise in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, pathology and radiology.
Patients are offered the latest methods of treatment for both early and late presentations of upper gastrointestinal cancers of the liver, pancreas and stomach, as well as cancers of the lower gastrointestinal tract -- colon, rectal and anal cancers. Other tumors include those of the bile ducts, small intestine, appendix and peritoneal lining.
Our goal is to provide personalized care for each patient, utilizing the most up-to-date methods in a supportive, caring and easily-accessible setting.
Treatment Methods
Combined multimodal therapy is often employed ustilizing the most advanced surgical techniques (including laparoscopy, robotic surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery -- TEM), chemotherapeutic regimens, and radiation techniques that best treat the patients.
All patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract are presented at a multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal/Colorectal Oncology Conference. The best approach for each patient is discussed and agreed upon by a large group of specialists in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and radiology among others. Subsequent care and follow up are also presented as treatment progresses.
Clinical Trials
Multiple research protocols are available to our patients. As a patient you have access to novel therapies through participation in both Tufts Medical Center clinical trials and national clincal trials.
