Clinical Program Overview
The
Hematological Malignancies Program
at the Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center offers care for all types of both common and rare blood cancers. We provide comprehensive care for diseases such as acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, different types of lymphomas and myeloma/amyloidosis. A team of highly trained and experienced specialists and support staff will be on your side to treat these frequently life changing conditions.
The program has a tradition of leadership and innovation in Hematology. Tufts Medical Center is regarded the cradle of hematology in the United States, as Dr. Robert Schwartz and Dr. William Damashek first demonstrated in the 1950s that certain drugs could prolong the survival of transplanted tissue. Today, the Cancer Center’s Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program delivers patient outcomes that are among the best in the nation and the Hematologic Malignancies Program enjoys a distinguished reputation for excellence and innovation. Members of the Program are nationally and internationally recognized physicians and scientists. More than any Hematological Malignancies program in New England, Tufts hematologists were recently named “Top Doctors” by Boston Magazine.
Patients who have undergone treatment for hematological malignancies at Tufts praise the staff for its attention to detail and personalized care. The multidisciplinary physician team makes sure that personalized medicine means that the patients receives highly effective therapy but at the same time avoids over-treatment. Quality of life for the patient during and after cancer therapy is very important to us. The Program enrolls patients on innovative trials of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and the National Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network.
But we don’t stop here. Members of the programs conduct basic and translational research to find better cures for blood cancers. Novel targeted medicines and cell based treatments to support the patient’s immune system continue to be developed by members of the program whose research is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Clinical Trials
As a patient you have access to novel therapies through participation in both Tufts Medical Center clinical trials and national clinical trials.
