The Division of adult Hematology/Oncology was founded by Dr. William Dameshek, the first president of the American Society of Hematology and one of the world’s pre-eminent hematologists. The Division has special expertise in the treatment of solid tumors, hematological malignancies, coagulation disturbances and immunological diseases.
Division faculty oversee more than 22,000 outpatient visits and treatments per year in the Cancer Center on the 8th floor of the South Building at Tufts Medical Center, and are responsible for inpatient, outpatient and consultative services in the fields of medical oncology, malignant hematology, transfusion medicine, and bone marrow and hematopoietic cell transplantation.
Faculty participate in multidisciplinary clinics across the spectrum of cancer types to coordinate patient care among medical, surgical, and radiation oncology specialties, as well as an extensive array of supportive care services, including palliative care.
The Division is supported by a specialty clinical laboratory that processes routine and research blood and bone marrow specimens, and a 17-bed Infusion Center for the administration of standard and experimental treatments, while The Neely Cell Therapy and Collection Center provides apheresis, photopheresis, and transfusion support. The Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Program at Tufts Medical Center holds the distinction of being the first transplant program in Boston to be nationally certified by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) as a transplant and donor collection center for both adult and pediatric transplants (autologous and allogeneic).
Through its Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program, division faculty have trained leaders who now head major academic hematology and oncology programs throughout the world. The Neely Center for Clinical Cancer Research is an important component of Cancer Center activities, with division faculty serving as principal investigators on cancer clinical trials from the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and pharmaceutical industry, as well as investigator-initiated trials and first-in-humans trials from the Cancer Center's Experimental Therapeutics Program.
