|
The Contact Dermatitis and Occupational Dermatology Clinic is staffed by our nationally recognized contact allergy specialist.
The gold standard for contact allergen identification is patch testing. Our team has extensive experience in this procedure and the interpretation of its results. We offer the ability to review hundreds of allergens based on the location of rash, medical history and occupation.

About Patch Testing
Patch testing is the gold standard for contact allergen identification. The testing is performed on patients with chronic, recurring contact dermatitis in order to isolate the suspected allergen that is causing the reaction. This requires three office visits. On the first visit, small patches of potential allergens are applied to the skin. These patches are removed 48 hours later to determine if a reaction has occurred. A third visit is scheduled approximately two days later to evaluated for a delayed reaction.
Additional Testing
The Contact Dermatitis and Occupational Dermatology Clinic may request additional tests including a skin biopsy or culture of the skin lesion to rule out other possible causes of skin irritation. This can be expedited by our close collaborative relationship with Tufts Medical Center’s pathology specialists.
