Program-Wide Conferences
St. Elizabeth's Grand Rounds: This is our premiere teaching conference and is unique to the Tufts Neurology program. A live patient is presented and then interviewed and examined by Dr. Sabin. Residents and faculty participate in a lively discussion of the patient's clinical problem. This conference teaches residents to formulate cases in a disciplined, systematic fashion based on clinical data. It also provides a model from which residents can learn how to interview and examine patients by watching a master clinician.
Thursdays, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, video teleconferenced to NEMC.
Emergency Lecture Series: Lectures from the faculty are given weekly in the beginning of each academic year about neurologic emergencies. These lectures are aimed not only at teaching junior residents how to handle such problems, but also serve as useful reviews for more senior residents. Tuesdays in July and August, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., video teleconferenced between all three sites.
Didactic Lecture Series: Lectures from the faculty are given every week, covering topics from all major subspecialty areas of clinical neurology. Every other Tuesday, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., video teleconferenced between all three sites.
Neuropathology Conferences: Interactive presentations by Dr. Rolf Pfannl covering basic neuropathology and neuroanatomy. Every other Tuesday from September - June, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., video teleconferenced between all three sites.
Clinical-Pathologic Conferences: Interesting cases (typically from our ward services) in which pathologic diagnoses have been made are presented by the resident rotating on neuropathology. After the residents and faculty give their diagnostic impressions, pathologic material is presented and the diagnosis is revealed. These conferences represent unique opportunities to consider the correlation between clinical and pathologic data and diagnoses. Coordinated by Dr. Adelman and Dr.Pfannl. One Wednesday morning per month, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., video teleconferenced to all three sites.
Brain Cutting: Brains from all autopsies performed at St. Elizabeth's are examined monthly. The resident rotating on neuropathology presents brief clinical summaries, after which the brain is examined externally, and then cut for internal gross examination. This is an excellent format in which to review neuroanatomy and gross neuropathology. Coordinated by Dr. Adelman. One Thursday evening per month, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m., St. Elizabeth's Medical Center.
Journal Club: Interesting and clinically relevant journal articles are discussed among residents and selected faculty members. Typically occurring in informal settings such as local restaurants and the homes of faculty members, this discussion group teaches residents the skills of critical analysis of scientific articles and how to apply research to clinical practice. Coordinated by Dr. Hinchey and Dr. Katz. One evening per month, various locations.
Ethics Conference: Discussion-based conference organized around the AAN's curriculum on ethics held over dinner. Coordinated by Dr. Russell (Chairman, AAN Ethics Section). Four - six evenings per year at various sites.
