This service is based upon a foundation of academic and clinical excellence. All new gynecologic cancer patient cases are presented at a weekly multi-disciplinary tumor board conference, which is teleconferenced with the Gynecologic Oncology Division at Caritas-St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. During this conference, prospective treatment decisions are made with the input from a variety of cancer specialists. The Division executes its care plans by working closely with members of the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, Surgery, Medical Oncology, Social and Nutritional Services in order to provide the highest level of comprehensive and individualized care to women and their families.
The Division is a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), a non-profit organization, which is committed to maintaining the highest standards in clinical trials development, execution, analysis and distribution of results. The GOG receives support from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and the Pharmaceutical Industry. Involvement in this program provides a vehicle through which Tufts Medical Center patients gain access to innovative treatments and procedures involving surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, the ever-expanding field of new biologic agents, and cancer prevention. Most studies involve translational research components aimed at linking the clinical patient outcomes to laboratory endpoints. It is hoped that from these studies will come new and innovative ways to detect cancers at earlier stages, improved methods of treatment that will be better directed at cancer tissue and less toxic to normal body tissue and organs, and a better insight into the cause of cancer and how to prevent or eliminate the disease.
Patients are seen in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Tufts Medical Center located in the South Building (860 Washington Street) on the Third Floor.
The Division maintains a particularly strong tie to the MetroWest region of the state, specifically the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, MA. On-site office hours are held and assistance to the institution’s gynecology staff in performing gynecologic oncology surgery at that facility is provided on a regular basis. Expertise is also shared with the local staff at its monthly tumor board conference.
