An Introduction to The Triple Board Residency Training Program
The Triple Board program is a 5-year integrated training program involving Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry. This program trains individuals to become board eligible in all three of the clinical specialties. The Triple Board Program is intended to foster the development of physicians who wish to provide clinical care, to teach, or to carry out research in areas such as child/adolescent consultation/liaison psychiatry, medical/psychiatric disorders, and mental health aspects of pediatric illnesses and developmental disorders. The Triple Board graduate often creates their own niche within the interface of these specialties, most commonly involving Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatrics.
At the Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center, there has been a close 50-year-long working relationship between Adult Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, and Pediatrics. As a result, it was not surprising that this program was selected as one of the original pilot Triple Board Programs in 1986. We have consistently obtained top-level candidates for our Triple Board Program.
When this program began, the PGY I and II years were used entirely for Pediatric Training. Adult and Child Psychiatry Training occupied all of the PGY III, IV, and V years. This schedule was later revised to include 6 months of Pediatrics Training and 6 months of Adult Psychiatry Training in the PGY II year, followed by 6 months of Pediatrics Training and 6 months of Child Psychiatry Training in the PGY III year. PGY IV and PGY V years are training in General and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, respectively. This helps our residents remain focused on the Triple Board aspect of their training by providing a lengthier period of combined training of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. A Pediatric Outpatient Continuity Clinic is available for follow-up of pediatric patients throughout all 5 years of training. Throughout the last 4 years of training, a Psychiatry Outpatient Continuity Clinic allows for the follow-up of adult and child psychiatry patients.
