Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Minimally Invasive Surgical Services or laparoscopic surgery at Tufts Medical Center is surgery performed without a large incision. Procedures are carried out with multiple small incisions through which miniaturized surgical instruments and a camera are inserted.
Our practice focuses on a range of gastrointestinal issues including anti-reflux disease, gall bladder disease, removal of adrenal glands, the spleen and hernia repairs. Many times, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery can offer dramatic advantages to a patient in place of traditional open surgeries.
Minimally invasive surgery often involves less risk than open surgery, reduces the possibility of infection, and disturbs far fewer anatomic structures. A medically advanced and fully accepted type of surgery, minimally invasive procedures are performed by surgeons Scott A. Shikora, MD and Michael Tarnoff, MD in New England's newest and most advanced operating rooms at Tufts Medical Center. Our laparoscopic sugery suites known as “endosuites” are the first of a kind in New England. Installed in October of 2002, they are considered the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art, world-class facilities in the country.
