Physicial Activity

Physical Activity/Exercise
Physical activity is a necessary component of weight loss and maintenance. The problem is that many of us do not get enough physical activity to see any benefits. Many factors including time, work, and family responsibilities combined with confusing information from the media leave many of us lost in the “what, how, when, and where’s” of physical activity and exercise. Patients struggle with questions of “what is considered physical activity and how is that different from exercise?” “How much is enough?” and “what type(s) of physical activity should I be doing?” The answers to these questions depend heavily on the individual. Our Physical Therapy Department will provide an evaluation and exercise plan based on your individual medical needs.
Regular physical activity has many benefits in the treatment of obesity. When safety precautions are recognized, obese individuals can safely participate in an exercise program. Although regular physical activity alone is probably insufficient to bring about significant fat loss, the combination of modest caloric restriction and a regular physical activity are necessary to induce favorable changes in body composition. In fact, regular physical activity is one of the best predictors of weight management. Making a commitment to manage your weight for the rest of your life is an important part of your success in this program.
“No one patient is the same, thus no one program should be the same.”
