Tufts MC True Blue Recipient: Katie Ring
CCT, Tufts Medical Center 7
Nomination from Susanne Meninger, Tufts Medical Center 7 Clinical Leader:
“Katie Ring works as a CCT and is incredibly kind to the children she cares for daily. She is the type of person that you immediately trust whether you are a nurse assigned with her, or a patient or family being cared for by her. She is a master at developing therapeutic relationships because she is so genuine.
“Recently I was caring for a 14-year-old girl who had surgery. She had some emotional issues as well as some developmental delay. In the daytime, a clinical group of nursing students had the patient and lamented that despite their best efforts and partnering with the mom, the patient would not get out of bed. A new clinical group started at 1 p.m. and the new instructor developed a plan with the student. She was confident they would prevail, but again the patient refused. Katie came in at 3 p.m. and was the CCT co-assigned to me. About an hour later, I saw the patient walking in the hall. When I asked Katie how she did it, her answer was simple, ‘She trusts me and I told her she would be OK.’ That evening, we actually couldn’t get the patient back to bed! She walked everywhere! Katie not only made the patient feel better, she was instrumental in facilitating compliance with an activity that helps prevent post-op complications.”
