Overview

This is a multicenter, randomized controlled trial comparing a short vs. long of post-operative antibiotic course in patients with simple or complicated appendicitis based on desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) using a response adjusted to duration of antibiotic risk (RADAR).

Study Details

Inclusion Criteria

  • Age ≥ 18 years
  • Planned appendectomy (laparoscopic or open)
  • Willing and able to provide informed consent
  • Working telephone number or reliable method to contact patient after hospital discharge

Exclusion Criteria

  • Inability to consent
  • Pregnant Women
  • Prisoners
  • Immunocompromised
  • Unlikely to comply with treatment or follow-up

Study Requirements

Patient involvement includes standard of care for appendicitis, and phone call post operatively. The duration of an individual subject’s participation in the study will be for approximately 1 month following appendectomy.

The duration anticipated to enroll all study subjects is 2-3 years. The estimated date for the investigators to complete this study is July 2024.
