Development of Blood Pressure Imager
Blood Pressure Imager (BPI), which is a new technology that does not require cuffs or expensive equipment, and can be used by untrained individuals at their own homes or regional care settings to measure blood pressure. In this study, blood pressure will be measured with BPI and blood pressure readings will be compared with a commercially available cuff-based BP measuring device.The BPI will be placed at the wrist of healthy volunteers or persons with history of high blood pressure with the help of a wrist strap- similar to the current heart-rate monitoring devices in the market, such as the Fitbit- and three sets of readings will be obtained.
Inclusion Criteria
- Volunteers who are physically and mentally able to consent and participate
Exclusion Criteria
- There will be no other exclusions in relation to gender, race or ethnic origin or disease condition
Study Requirements
If the subject volunteers to participate in this study, after signing the informed consent, responses to background data - age, gender, height, weight, wrist circumference of dominant arm, history of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease – will be collected; The BPI will be strapped to the right or left wrist making sure it is comfortable to the subject and the readings from the BPI will be recorded in a computer. BP readings will also be obtained from a cuff-based, commercially available BP measuring device placed on the same arm. A minimum 3 and maximum 6 sets of readings will be obtained. The collection of the background data will take 5 to 10 mins. The placement of the BPI and cuff-BP device and obtaining the blood pressure readings will take about 30 to 45 mins. Overall, the study procedures will be less than an hour.
