Conditions impacting the spinal cord range from injuries results in paralysis to diseases such as polio.  Some of the oldest works in the exhibition, including a depiction from ancient Egypt of a priest with polio and a relief from Assyria of a lion with a severed spinal cord, fall into this category, illustrating that these neurological disorders have plagued man (and beast) for thousands of years.
