Meet John Mignano, MD, PhD

John Mignano, MD is a pediatric radiation oncologist at Tufts Medical Center.

Why did you go into cancer care?

When I was young my grandfather and two aunts died due to uncontrolled cancer. In college I investigated how toxins affected biological systems. In grad school, I investigated how carcinogens caused tumor formation in normal cells. As a postdoctoral fellow, I investigated how chemotherapy drugs killed cancer cells. I now kill cancers with radiation.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

When that rare patient that you did not expect to survive his or her cancer is still alive and doing well 5 years later.

Tell us one interesting fact about yourself.

My son is attempting to teach me to windsurf.
