Ruby Millea: Making spirits bright

Ruby Millea sitting in front of her mailbox that isn't able to fit all of her mailRuby is a 4-year-old neuroblastoma patient, who has been an inpatient at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center since late October, when she had surgery to remove about 95% of the tumor.

Ruby loves to get mail, so when Pediatric Hematology/Oncology nurse, Kathy Zerrip, RN, saw a little mailbox when she was out shopping, she felt like she had to get it for Ruby. The hope was to give Ruby an incentive to get out of bed to go check her mail (walking is an important aspect of recovery from the surgery) by setting up the mailbox outside her hospital room.

Ruby's parents encouraged family and friends on social media to send Ruby mail, and within a week, the appeal went viral. In the past 3 weeks, Ruby has received 7,122 letters and 347 packages – 7,469 pieces of mail in total from all over the country and international locations, as well!
