Prior to joining the Department of Orthopaedics in September 2014, Orthopaedic Surgeon Michael Baratz, MD had plans to embark on the GEANCO Foundation’s medical mission to Nigeria to perform hip and knee replacements, restoring quality of life to those in critical need of orthopaedic care. Shortly after joining the Tufts MC team, Dr. Baratz’s peers learned about the mission and were eager to join him and apply their individual areas of expertise to the cause.
In April, 2015, after raising the necessary funds, Dr. Baratz and four of his colleagues traveled to Nigeria, where they worked day in and day out for 10 days in order to help as many patients as possible. The results were impressive: In a five-day window they performed 15 knee replacements, five hip replacements and one femoral nailing. Most importantly, they succeeded in giving each patient the gift of pain-free mobility and the opportunity to enjoy life again.
