B. Scott Segal, MD, joins Tufts Medical Center as Chair of Anesthesiology


BOSTON -- B. Scott Segal, MD, has Joined Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine as Anesthesiologist in Chief and Chair of Anesthesiology.

Most recently, Segal served as Vice Chairman for Education, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Segal has a distinguished background in clinical care, research, teaching and administration, and has conducted groundbreaking research on the effects of epidural anesthesia during childbirth.

In addition to his Vice Chairmanship at the Brigham, Segal was also Director of the Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship and Director of Residency Recruitment for the Department of Anesthesiology. He earned his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, where he was also Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1988. He also performed an internship in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary physiology and pediatric pulmonary medicine there before arriving at the Brigham for his anesthesiology residency. Last year he completed his master’s of science in Healthcare Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. He lives in Chestnut Hill.

Segal has been named one of the “Best Doctors in America” three times and has received several awards for excellence in teaching. He is a reviewer for a number of research journals in both anesthesia and obstetrics.
