MWMC physicians to join New England Quality Care Alliance
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – MetroWest Medical Center (MWMC) and Tufts Medical Center, which have worked together for more than a year to bring advanced pediatric care to the MetroWest community, today announced they would extend their partnership to enhance adult services available in the MetroWest area. Tufts MC will work with MWMC to bring advanced specialty services to MWMC so residents do not have to travel to Boston for many services. When patients do need the highest level of care only available at an academic medical center, Tufts Medical Center will be MWMC’s preferred referral partner.
“At MetroWest Medical Center, we are committed to providing our patients with the highest quality care in their community and our partnership with Tufts Medical Center allows us to do just that,” said Andrei Soran, CEO of MetroWest Medical Center. “We look forward to continuing to work with the exceptional physicians and leadership at Tufts Medical Center to expand our services and capabilities and deliver on our commitment to MetroWest residents."
MWMC physicians who are currently part of the MetroWest Accountable Healthcare Organization physician network will also join New England Quality Care Alliance (NEQCA), the physician network of Tufts Medical Center. As part of NEQCA, these 165 physicians will work with nearly 1,500 physicians in the region to improve medical care through quality and technology initiatives.
“Given our shared patient-centric philosophy of care, the expansion of our partnership with MetroWest Medical Center is a natural progression,” said Ellen Zane, CEO of Tufts Medical Center. “We are proud of this affiliation which will allow us to partner with MetroWest Medical Center and its excellent physicians to bring advanced medical services to their adult patients in the MetroWest region.”
The hospitals will work together to determine the services needed most in the MetroWest area. As with other Tufts MC affiliations, Tufts MC specialists will see patients and do some treatments and procedures in the community. When high level advanced care is needed, Tufts MC physicians in Boston will work with the MWMC physicians to ensure a smooth transition of the patient to Tufts Medical Center and will stay in regular contact with the patient’s community physicians.
The hospitals will also work together to provide greater access to clinical research trials to patients in the MWMC region. In addition, the institutions will work together to provide community hospital-based training opportunities for future physicians.
This affiliation prepares all three organizations for the changing health care reform environment. Together, the organizations are developing an outstanding Accountable Care Organization that meets the needs of patients, provides high quality care and delivers 21st century health care in an efficient and coordinated manner.
“We are looking forward to working together with the physicians of the Metro West Accountable Healthcare Organization. Together we can deliver excellent care with our focus on the needs of our patients and their families,” said Jeffrey Lasker, MD, CEO of NEQCA. “Our combined expertise in providing high quality and efficient care in the community will serve our patients well.”
MWMC and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center have partnered to bring advanced pediatric care to children in the MetroWest area since February 2009. This expanded affiliation builds on the success of that relationship, which has enabled many children to receive outpatient and inpatient treatment closer to home.
“We have seen great success in our pediatric partnership with Floating Hospital and regularly receive feedback from patient families that they truly value the access to high quality, specialized care close to home,” said Michael Gottlieb, Chief Medical Officer at MWMC. “Our physicians look forward to the opportunity to work alongside Tufts Medical Center physicians in diverse specialties and settings to create best practices for our patients in many settings.”
As a result of the pediatric affiliation that was established between the two institutions in 2009, inpatient services at MWMC have been transformed by establishment of the pediatric hospitalist program. Through this innovative program, Floating Hospital pediatricians provide on-site advanced pediatrics expertise 24-hours a day, ensuring there is always a pediatrician available to hospitalized children, their parents, and to the children’s regular pediatricians. The partnership between Floating Hospital and MWMC has also resulted in enhanced collaboration with specialists at Tufts Medical Center to transfer patients seamlessly to Floating Hospital for intensive care services when necessary. Throughout their stay, their community physicians are kept well informed to ensure patients’ smooth return to their families or MWMC when intensive services are no longer needed.
As part of the affiliation with Floating Hospital, more than 10 specialties are now offered at the Floating Hospital Pediatric Specialty Center in Framingham so that families do not have to drive into Boston for outpatient appointments with pediatric specialists including gastroenterology, neurology, cancer, developmental pediatrics, pulmonary, cardiology and others.
