BOSTON – Tufts Medical Center has named accomplished health care executive Craig T. Williams as its new Chief Operating Officer, effective November 12, 2012. Williams, who has served as the COO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization (PO) since January 2011, will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of that role. The creation of the joint COO position for the two organizations will further strengthen the connection between the Medical Center and its physicians.
“Since joining the organization in 2008, Craig has worked closely with doctors, nurses and other professionals to enhance our outpatient services and improve our operating efficiencies,” said Eric Beyer, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. “He has shown tremendous leadership and team building skills, and boasts an outstanding record of improvements in patient satisfaction, productivity and profitability. Craig’s common sense approach, intellect and creativity will serve him well as he helps us navigate through a challenging era of health care reform.”
Williams, who has nearly 20 years’ experience in health care finance and operations, will oversee human resources, capital facilities and engineering, ambulatory operations, food and retail services, and the business operations of Tufts Medical Center’s departments of medicine, neurosciences and ophthalmology. As a member of Tufts MC’s Senior Team, he will focus on service and operational excellence, including process improvement, employee engagement and patient satisfaction initiatives.

Williams has been a major contributor to the success of key programs at Tufts Medical Center during his time as COO of the PO and previously as Tufts MC’s Senior Vice President of Medicine and Ambulatory Operations from 2008-2010. He was the impetus behind a customer service improvement program called “iCare,” which builds employee awareness of service standards and boosts accountability. Williams’ patient satisfaction initiatives also recently received accolades from survey company Press Ganey for making significant performance improvements. In addition, Williams has collaborated with Tufts MC’s information systems department to manage the implementation of eClinicalWorks (ECW), the Medical Center’s new electronic medical records system. Its successful integration has begun to increase patient involvement in their own care and provide referring physicians patient information in a more timely manner.

Prior to joining Tufts MC, Williams built an impressive track record of health care business and operations achievements at several Boston-area academic medical centers and health care organizations, including Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Physician Organization, Partners Healthcare System, Blue Cross Blue Shield and health care consulting and accounting firm Feeley & Driscoll, P.C.
Williams received his bachelor’s degree from Framingham State University and earned a Master of Business Administration with a Heath Care Concentration from Suffolk University. He lives in Wakefield, Mass. with his wife CarolAnn, who is the Chief Financial Officer at Massachusetts Eye And Ear Infirmary, and their three children.
