Tufts Children's Hospital and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital partner

06/17/2013

BROCKTON, Mass.  (June 17) - Tufts Children's Hospital at Tufts Medical Center and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital have reached an agreement to provide expert inpatient pediatric care for children in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Through this new relationship, pediatric hospitalists will provide round-the-clock care for all children on a dedicated pediatric unit at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital.  The addition of the hospitalists means that children from the youngest newborns through early adulthood will have dedicated doctors from a renowned Boston pediatric teaching hospital overseeing their care. These doctors then communicate with a child’s community pediatrician to ensure local, standardized care. This partnership builds on the hospitals’ existing collaboration to care for newborns; Tufts Children's Hospital neonatologists have cared for babies in Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital’s Level II nursery since 2005.

“We at Tufts Children's Hospital believe that kids do best when they have the expert care they need in the right setting – and whenever possible we want them to stay close to their families and community,” said John Schreiber, MD, MPH, Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chief Administrative Officer of Tufts Children's Hospital.  “With Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital joining our network we will have nearly 30 pediatric hospitalists at four hospitals throughout eastern Massachusetts, and we have already enabled thousands of kids to get their care closer to home. When kids do need tertiary care at Tufts Children's Hospital, our hospitalists help make that transition seamless.  We look forward to working with Brockton Hospital on improving care for children in the Brockton area.”

“The expansion of our longstanding relationship with Tufts Children's Hospital from newborns to kids of all ages will make life easier for patients and parents, and also for referring pediatricians,” said Kim Hollon, President and CEO of Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. “We know how critical it is to provide expert pediatric care to families in our area. Pediatricians will be able to communicate directly with the hospitalists during and following their patients’ hospitalization to enable easy transitions of care.”

Tufts Children's Hospital, with 94 beds and more than 100 pediatric specialists, has a long history of providing high-quality, innovative care, dating back to its days as a hospital ship in Boston Harbor in the late 1800s. Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Children's Hospital have many physicians who have been named “Best Doctors” nationally and in Boston by U.S. News and World Report.  Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Children's Hospital ranks in the top quarter of academic medical centers nationally in the annual quality rankings of the United HealthSystems Consortium. The hospital has received high marks from the Joint Commission, the national accrediting agency for hospitals, and has a Grade A for quality from the Leapfrog Group.

“The collaboration between Signature Healthcare and Tufts Tufts Children's is a great opportunity for our smallest patients to access 24/7 pediatric care while in the hospital,” said Dr. Melissa Mauro-Small, Chief of Pediatrics. “Caring for the sickest children and helping them feel better is my passion, and I look forward to meeting and working with the patients at Signature Healthcare.”

Tufts Children's Hospital has long demonstrated a deep commitment to providing inpatient pediatric care in the community, currently running three inpatient pediatric units (including special care nurseries) in Lawrence, Lowell and Framingham. Tufts Children's neonatologists also oversee neonatal nurseries in Melrose and Plymouth.  Tufts Children's Hospital Specialty Centers in Framingham, Woburn, Chelmsford and Lawrence provide subspecialist care for children on an outpatient basis.
