Michael Wagner named Interim President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center

09/24/2013

Boston, MA (Sept. 19) - Michael Wagner MD, a national leader in hospital and physician quality and innovation, has been named interim President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. Wagner is a long-time executive at Tufts Medical Center and a nationally-known physician leader, most recently serving as President and CEO of the 550-member Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization and as Chief Medical Officer for the Medical Center.

Wagner succeeds Eric Beyer, who led the organization for the past two years.

“We are very fortunate to have a leader like Mike Wagner ready to step in and guide the institution.  Mike is not only a respected physician, but a successful businessman,” said Thomas Hollister, Chair of the Board of Tufts Medical Center. “We are confident in his ability to guide the Medical Center through the coming months.”

In addition to appointing Wagner, the Board has asked Ellen Zane, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, to assist the Medical Center with strategic planning and implementation as head of the Board’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Wagner also served the organization as Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care from 2008 through 2012. He is currently the Chair of the Finance Committee of the Board of the New England Quality Care Alliance. Over the course of his career, he has engaged actively in physician training and researched better ways to deliver care to patients. Wagner has worked administratively in both academic and community hospitals and clinically in both primary care and inpatient medicine, gaining a unique perspective on health care delivery. Over the past 20 years, Wagner has visited nearly 250 hospitals around the country to evaluate their hospital-based services, to provide recommendations on development and management of hospitalist programs and to assist in creating better physician practices that support the strategic objectives of those hospitals.

Wagner has held various administrative roles at the University of Rochester, Fidelis Care, and Cove HealthCare, all based in New York, and was the CEO of EmCare Inpatient Services, a division of a national physician management company based in Dallas/Fort Worth.  He is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and graduated magna cum laude from Connecticut College. He first came to Tufts Medical Center in 1990 out of his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH.

“I am proud to take on this role in an organization with a deep history dating back to 1796 which provides high quality care and services to children and adults,” said Wagner.  “I look forward to working with my fellow doctors as well as the nurses and staff to lead Tufts Medical Center in an exciting marketplace.”

Zane was the first woman to run Tufts Medical Center in its 217-year history, a position she retired from in 2011.  Since that time she has remained an active member of the Board, serving as one of its Vice Chairs.

A nationally recognized leader in health care, Zane was Network President of Partners HealthCare System and Chief Executive Officer of Quincy Hospital.  She holds seats on the boards of several publicly traded companies as well as Press Ganey, a private company recognized as the preeminent provider of patient satisfaction measurement and data in acute hospital settings.  She is also the Vice Chair of the board at her alma mater, the George Washington University in Washington, DC.  Her list of awards bestowed by the health care industry and others is too numerous to name here.

“Mike brings the right combination of medical knowledge and business experience to the table and I whole-heartedly support his appointment.  I am also very pleased to be able to work with the Board to design and implement a strategic plan for an institution which is close to my heart,” said Zane.  “The people who make up this Medical Center give our patients the very best care every day, and it is up to us to help them by continuing to plan for Tufts Medical Center’s future.”
