Joseph P. Campanelli to Chair Tufts Medical Center Board of Trustees

Long-time Board member and Medical Center advocate returns to Chairman’s post

Boston (April 22) – Tufts Medical Center today announced that Joseph P. Campanelli has been appointed Chairman of the Medical Center’s Board of Trustees.  Campanelli, a long-time Board member and strong advocate for the Medical Center, previously served as Chair for five years until Thomas Hollister was appointed in 2010.

Campanelli will now replace Hollister, who is stepping down from the Board to become Chief Financial Officer of Harvard University.

“Joe Campanelli has been a guiding force for Tufts Medical Center for a long time. His strategic counsel and leadership will be highly valued as he chairs our Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Michael Wagner, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. “This is an exciting time of rapid change in health care; Tufts Medical Center and hospitals nationwide are transforming the industry to make it more patient-centric and affordable. Joe’s decades of experience as an executive leader and his understanding of the market make him an ideal Chairman for Tufts Medical Center.”

Campanelli has been a member of the Medical Center’s Board of Trustees for 13 years and has served as Chair of the Medical Center’s Quality of Care Committee and Finance Committees. He is the former Chairman and CEO of Flagstar Bank Corp. and former President and CEO of Sovereign Bank (now Santander).  He is a Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, and served on the Board of Trustees at Suffield Academy in Suffield, Conn. and at Babson College, his alma mater. Campanelli lives in Wellesley, Mass.

“It’s a great honor to return as Chairman of the Trustees and to champion the initiatives Tom has helped to lead these last five years,” Campanelli said. “Tufts Medical Center has been a leader in providing high quality care at a lower cost, and in partnering with community providers.  As more and more employers and patients express their preference for this model, wonderful opportunities are ahead for Tufts Medical Center. I feel fortunate to lead a board with so many dedicated and talented members who are committed to the Medical Center’s continued growth and success.”

Hollister served as Chair for five years starting in February 2010 and served on the board for eight years.  He is resigning from the Board to devote his time and attention to his new position as CFO at Harvard. Hollister’s vast financial knowledge and leadership acumen were of great assistance to Tufts MC as he served on the Strategic Planning, Executive and Real Estate committees of the board and assisted in fundraising efforts.

“It has been a privilege and a joy to serve as the Chair of the Board at Tufts Medical Center. It is an extraordinary place with the most devoted and talented people in health care,” Hollister said. “I leave at an exciting time for the Medical Center as it considers and executes on important strategic opportunities and is led by an outstanding CEO and strong Board of Trustees. Joe Campanelli is an exceptional leader, well known to the community, and bearing the kind of vision the Medical Center needs.”

“We are extremely grateful for Tom’s service to the Tufts Medical Center community;” said Wagner.  “His contributions will have a lasting impact on our organization, and now he has a wonderful opportunity to make an impact at Harvard. We wish him tremendous success in that endeavor.”
