Cape Cod Affiliation

HYANNIS, Mass.  (Oct. 21) - Tufts Children's Hospital at Tufts Medical Center and Cape Cod Hospital have entered into a partnership to provide around-the-clock inpatient pediatric care for children on Cape Cod. Through this new clinical affiliation, Tufts Children's Hospital faculty will serve as pediatric hospitalists at Cape Cod Hospital. The partnership began earlier this month.

“We are very pleased to partner with Cape Cod Hospital to provide kids on the Cape with the best possible care as close to home as possible,” said Rashed Durgham, MD, former interim Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chief Administrative Officer at Tufts Children's Hospital. “We are working successfully with community hospitals from Lawrence to Brockton to help them keep more of their pediatric patients in their communities. When kids do need tertiary-level care, our hospitalists make the transition to Tufts Children's Hospital seamless for patients and their families.”

Hospitalists are physicians who are specially trained in the management of patients while they are in the hospital. The presence of the pediatric hospitalists at Cape Cod Hospital will ensure that children from the youngest newborns through early adulthood will have dedicated doctors from a renowned Boston pediatric teaching hospital overseeing their care around the clock. The hospitalists care for children while they are in the hospital and communicate with a child’s regular pediatrician to ensure a smooth transition back to home and school. They also consult with medical staff in the Emergency Department and care for newborns in the nursery.

“This exciting partnership ensures that children on Cape Cod and their parents will have access to pediatric specialists no matter when they come into the hospital,” said Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare, which owns Cape Cod Hospital. “Our community pediatricians and hospital personnel look forward to working with Tufts Children's Hospital faculty members, so that we can continue to provide timely, expert and up-to-date care to our community.”

As members of Tufts Children's Hospital’s faculty, pediatric hospitalists at Cape Cod Hospital will perform regular rotations at Tufts Children's Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Boston, remaining close to the leading edge of pediatric care. Hospitalists’ experience in the NICU will add an additional layer of expertise at Cape Cod Hospital’s busy nursery. Faculty will also have access to network-wide quality improvement initiatives and the opportunity to engage with colleagues working at other community hospitals in Tufts Children's Hospital’s network.

“We’re very excited to work with the physicians, nurses and other staff at Cape Cod Hospital, and to help recruit highly-trained pediatric hospitalists to this vital Cape health care institution,” said Elisabeth Schainker, MD, MS, Chief of Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine at Tufts Children's Hospital. “In each of our pediatric hospitalist programs at community hospitals, we strive to raise the level of pediatric care to serve kids, families and local pediatricians. We have recruited a great team of doctors for this program at Cape Cod Hospital who we know will do a great job serving the community.”

Tufts Children's Hospital has long demonstrated a deep commitment to providing inpatient pediatric care in the community, with hospitalists providing care in four other inpatient pediatric units (including special care nurseries) at Lawrence General Hospital, Lowell General Hospital, MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. Tufts Children's neonatologists also oversee the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital’s special care nursery. Tufts Children's Hospital Specialty Centers in Framingham, Woburn, Chelmsford, Westford and Lawrence provide subspecialist care for children on an outpatient basis.
