Site for national clinical study to test personalized gel to promote wound healing

09/28/2017

(Boston) - Tufts Medical Center will serve as a major site for a nationwide clinical trial, funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and sponsored by Nuo Therapeutics, Inc., to test its Aurix System, an FDA-cleared product designed to promote wound healing. Geneve Allison, MD, attending physician at theCenter for Vascular, Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine, is the study site’s principal investigator.

In the randomized study, eligible patients will have their own platelets and plasma isolated from a blood sample via a table-top centrifuge, then mixed with pharmaceutical reagents to activate the body’s own healing properties. The golden bioactive hematogel that results will be topically applied to the patient’s wound, which will be monitored weekly for expedited healing.

“This is a cutting edge treatment that may change the way we approach the care of many serious types of chronic wounds,” said Dr. Allison. “It uses the patient’s own growth factors to facilitate healing, which is quite exciting. Another benefit is how quickly the therapy can be administered. The patient’s blood is drawn, the mixture is prepared and the gel is applied to the wound, all within the span of 30 minutes.”

To participate in the study, patients must be Medicare eligible adults who have had a diabetic foot ulcer, a venous leg ulcer or a pressure ulcer for longer than a month.

Tufts MC is currently recruiting patients for the Aurix System study.
