Ally's story: Gaining control

09/11/2018

Ally before working with the Weight and Wellness CenterFor as long as I can remember, I have struggled with my weight. Nothing I ever did seemed to work, and in fact, sometimes it felt like the attempts I was making at getting healthier, was only making things worse.

When I was 16 I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and I literally did everything I could to ignore it. I ate the way I wanted, I barely worked out, and when I was old enough to drink, I went for the all the sugary delicious fruity beverages I could find.  It wasn’t on purpose, or to sabotage myself… it was just how I wanted to live.

As I got older, I started to eat more cautiously, go to the gym more frequently, and tried so hard to be consistent with my diabetes medication.  I just kept failing. I tried every single diet program I could afford, and nothing ‘stuck’.  On top of it, I didn’t actually feel the symptoms of my diabetes, so I pretended it didn’t exist; yet, at every single doctor’s appointment, my blood work showed how out of control I really was.

Necessary change

Ally after her weight loss surgery at Tufts MCEverything changed when I heard that going through a weight loss surgery, could potentially alleviate my diabetes. Nothing mattered more, than making sure I could live my life without fear of my own body.  At this point, my weight and diabetes was now holding me back from starting a family.

I began to talk to people, and look into programs, when I found Tufts Medical Center’s Weight and Wellness program. From the moment I walked into the office, I knew I was on the right track.

Life has changed for the better, in a million and one ways. I only have the incredible program and staff at Tufts MC, and the support of family and friends to thank.
