Iris Jaffe, MD, PhD is the Elisa Kent Mendelsohn Professor of Molecular Cardiology and Executive Director of the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI) at Tufts Medical Center, in Boston, MA where she is also an attending Cardiologist. Dr. Jaffe received her BA in Biochemistry, PhD in Molecular Biology, and MD degrees all at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital, clinical Cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Vascular Biology Research Fellowship in the MCRI at Tufts Medical Center, all in Boston, MA. Iris joined the faculty at Tufts Medical Center in 2005 and was promoted to Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in 2017.
Dr. Jaffe’s research combines her background in molecular and vascular biology with her interest as a clinical Cardiologist to explore molecular mechanisms that contribute to common cardiovascular diseases with a goal of identifying novel treatments. Her lab has specifically focused on the role of the aldosterone-responsive mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in blood vessels and demonstrated a direct contribution to hypertension, atherosclerosis, vascular remodeling, vein graft failure, and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Jaffe is the recipient of numerous grants, awards and honors for her research discoveries, including the Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association and she is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). Iris Jaffe has served as Associate Editor for Clinical Science and on the Editorial Boards of Endocrinology and Hypertension. She is a standing member of the NIH Vascular Cell and Molecular Biology (VCMB) Study Section which she currently chairs.
The primary focus of the Jaffe lab is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying common vascular disorders including hypertension, vascular remodeling, and atherosclerosis with specific emphasis on the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. The Jaffe laboratory demonstrated the presence of functional mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) in human vascular cells and is studying the role of vascular MR in cardiovascular function and disease. The lab uses in vitro molecular techniques in vascular cells, genome wide “omics” analyses of cardiovascular tissues, whole vessels studies of vascular function, and in vivo tissue-specific transgenic mouse models to study vascular structure, function, and responses to injury and atherogenic stimuli to identify the molecular mechanisms of vascular disease and identify novel treatment targets.
