Dr. Pitkin graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Petersburg University (Russia) in Mechanics. He received his Ph.D. from the Central Institute for Prosthetic Research, Moscow, and the Doctor of Technical Sciences (D.Sc.) degree from LETI University, St. Petersburg.

Before joining the faculty of Tufts University in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Pitkin headed the Foot Biomechanics Department at the St. Petersburg Institute of Prosthetics. He was a Visiting Scientist at the Human Performance Laboratory at The University of Calgary, and at the Newman Laboratory for Biomechanics and Human Rehabilitation at MIT.

In 1999, Dr. Pitkin organized in St. Petersburg, Russia, the first ever amputee hockey team, and was a co-founder and the first President of the International Standing Ice Hockey Federation (2004-2006 and 2008-2012). He teaches a course “Computerized motion analysis for the graduate students in biomedical sciences at the Tufts School of Medicine.

Dr. Pitkin published more than 80 research articles and four monographs in biomechanics and prosthetics.
