Stuart Levy, MD, is Professor of Molecular Biology & Microbiology and of Medicine and Director of the Center for Adaptation Genetics & Drug Resistance at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Levy discovered the efflux mechanism for drug (tetracycline) resistance and was among the first scientists to document the transfer of resistant bacteria from animals to farm workers.

Much of Dr. Levy’s work as a microbiologist and physician has focused on the mechanisms and control of drug resistance, in both bacterial and mammalian cells. He is also co-founder and President of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, the leading global non-governmental organization working to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for current and future generations.
