Improving health + preventing disease

The Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) provides comprehensive, compassionate and confidential care for every type of infectious disease, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. We solve problems and are here to help with the most up-to-date treatments.

Everything we do is centered on improving health and preventing infectious diseases at the patient, hospital and global community levels.

For patients and referring physicians: Expect the best

Our dedication doesn't stop when our patients leave our care. We follow our patients until their problem is resolved. Our specialties in our outpatient clinic include infectious disease, comprehensive HIV care, travel medicine, complex wound care, outpatient IV antibiotics and the evaluation of patients before and after solid organ or bone marrow transplantation.

Communication with you, the referring physician, is our highest priority. We value the importance of including primary care or other referring doctors throughout your time in our care.

For trainees and researchers: Everything you need to succeed

Our state-of-the-art research in bacterial, HIV and other viral and parasitic diseases spans basic science, clinical research, outcomes and translational research in the U.S. and multiple international sites.

The division's high standards for medical training are combined with a rich teaching environment at all levels, including our ACGME-accredited Infectious Diseases Fellowship. Our over $4 million research budget includes $1 million for structured, mentored research training to help our fellows become independently funded academic researchers. To this end, we also funded higher education for MPH, MS or PhD degrees at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences in Boston.

For the hospital community: Patient safety is #1

We promote patient safety through our infection control and epidemiology efforts. For example, our Antimicrobial Management Team helps control the spread of resistant microbes by promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics. We also provide collegial, same-day inpatient consultations to our physician colleagues on any aspect of preventing and treating infectious diseases, with close communication and coordination with multiple specialists. We are available for emergency consultation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Department research

The Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts MC is home to some of the top infectious diseases researchers in the country. Our investigators maintain highly productive and well-funded basic science, translational, clinical and outcomes and global health research programs investigating bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic pathogens and diseases. They conduct research locally, nationally and across the globe, working to gain a better understanding of infectious diseases and find improvements in patient care.

Partnering with Tufts MC and Tufts University, the Tufts Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR) is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary initiative with a mission to deliver new and innovative solutions to combat the global threat of antimicrobial resistance. CIMAR faculty are experts in fields critical to this mission, including microbiology, infectious disease, veterinary medicine, engineering, epidemiology, global health, drug development, education and policy.

Mentoring, structured training and preparation for successful grant applications to federal and private funding agencies, which enable trainees to launch independent academic research careers with our partners at Tufts CTSI. We also participate in clinical trials across the Medical Center.

Geographic Medicine + Infectious Diseases research

Residencies + fellowships

The Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases faculty at Tufts MC is deeply committed to helping our fellows reach their career goals. Through our clinical training and research training programs, the Infectious Diseases Fellowship provides rich educational opportunities covering the breadth and depth of infectious diseases for community-acquired and nosocomial infections. These areas include:

  • HIV infection: We have over 500 patients under our care and participate in national and international clinical trials.
  • Transplantation infectious diseases: We participate in comprehensive pre- and post-transplantation care for the heart, liver, kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
  • Hospital epidemiology and infection prevention: This program, built by David Snydman, MD, Emeritus Division Chief and former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer and led by Shira Doron, MD, MS, has had success in reducing the rate of hospital-acquired infections.
  • Antimicrobial stewardship: We have one of the most comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship programs in the U.S. and have successfully reduced resistance and cost.
  • Global health and travel medicine: We provide travel care for hundreds of patients each year and also participate in global health research in Africa, Asia and Central/South America.
  • Outpatient antimicrobial treatment: We provide comprehensive, coordinated outpatient care for patients with complex infections requiring parenteral treatment.
  • Wound care and hyperbaric oxygen: Our infectious diseases physicians are embedded in a multidisciplinary clinic to treat wounds and provide the only hyperbaric oxygen therapy available in a Boston academic medical center.
  • Care for a diverse patient population: Through the clinical training program, you will provide outpatient and inpatient care for a range of patient populations, including those of our downtown hospital, patients of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (which partners with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and the Massachusetts Department of Corrections) and patients of Lahey Hospital, located in Burlington, Mass.

Our program offers rich research and scholarly opportunities. All fellows have a minimum of 6 months of protected research time. Our fellows are highly productive and have the chance to present their work at national and international meetings, such as IDWeek, ASM Microbe, SHEA and CROI.
