The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) has a long and rich tradition of delivering outstanding care to patients with chest, lung and esophageal conditions.

Our thoracic surgeons provide state-of-the-art surgical care using a multidisciplinary approach so that patients with even the most complex diseases receive the latest therapies in a timely manner. Working with a team of care professionals, including oncologists, pulmonologists, radiation oncologists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists and rehabilitation specialists, we create treatment plans individualized to each patient's unique needs to ensure the highest quality of care.

We offer the latest in minimally invasive techniques for treating a range of diseases, including advanced robotic surgery with the smallest and fewest incisions possible. Department research

The Division of Thoracic Surgery provides patients access to innovative treatment through Tufts MC-based and national clinical trials. By enrolling in new clinical trials, you may have access to new treatments that are otherwise unavailable.

Residencies + fellowships

Tufts Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine, offers a 2-year ACGME accredited residency in thoracic surgery. The program accepts 1 resident per year. All individuals who have completed the program have successfully passed the examination of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

The goal of the program is to produce the finest surgeon leaders of the future. The Program Director is Frederick Y. Chen, MD, PhD, chief of cardiac surgery. The PD and associate PD work closely for the benefit of resident education and are deeply committed to resident education. The faculties of both divisions are equally as committed.
