This three-year program offers direct patient care responsibility under close full-time faculty supervision in an academic setting. The goals of the program are to enrich and advance house officers' clinical skills, knowledge base, problem-solving abilities, clinical judgment, and patient interactions.
Many of the rotations, both inpatient and outpatient, occur through our subspecialty ward services which allow trainees to learn each subject area from an expert in that field. There is also time spent on several general medicine ward teams to master the typical bread-and-butter medical cases.
This emphasis on subspecialty learning carries through into our ambulatory care practices where house staff get exposures to a variety of subspecialty outpatient clinics working closely with attendings in a variety of fields. They get to bring this knowledge together as they care for their own panel of patients at Tufts’ Primary Care - Boston clinic during dedicated primary care rotations throughout their residency.
While the majority of rotations occur within Tufts Medical Center hospital in Chinatown, each trainee also spends time rotating in a community hospital (Newton-Wellesley Hospital) and has the option to rotate through a satellite primary care clinic in Quincy, Massachusetts. At both of these settings, house staff get to experience community-based medicine and a different cohort of patients than seen at our primary campus. Additionally, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, house staff work on a mixed-resident team with MGH interns and residents, which allows us to connect with our colleagues across town.
We offer subspecialty inpatient and outpatient electives and research or teaching electives depending on each resident’s interest and career goals during all three years.
