Floating Welcomes Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Jesse Winer, MD

Dr. Jesse Winer joined Floating Hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery in July. We recently sat down with Dr. Winer to learn a little more about his background and what drew him to the field of neurosurgery.

Please share with us your background.

Dr. Winer: I graduated from UMass Medical School, did my residency at University of Southern California, which included an epilepsy fellowship, and completed a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.

What drew you to neurosurgery?

Dr. Winer: I am drawn to pediatric neurosurgery from both an intellectual and social perspective. I enjoy the interactions with not just my patients but their families, and pediatric neurosurgery often provides me with the opportunity to work with the family as a unit, not just an isolated patient. I also enjoy the team approach to caring for children- working with pediatricians, intensivists, other specialists and families to provide the best care for our patients. From an intellectual standpoint, studying and working on the developing nervous system is fascinating to me- it has a unique potential to adapt, as well as to provide insight into how our brains truly function.

Why did you join Floating Hospital?

Dr. Winer: I chose to practice at Floating Hospital for Children because I feel this environment provides me a unique opportunity to serve my local community. We provide accessible world-class care in a very collegial environment.

How do you communicate with referring pediatricians?

Dr. Winer: I am readily available by email and phone, and happy to provide a direct cell phone if the pediatricians would like.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

Dr. Winer: When I’m not practicing, I enjoy spending time with my family- I have two children- a newborn and a four-year-old that provide me with endless entertainment and enjoyment.
