If you are over 50, and experiencing back or leg pain while walking or standing that goes away when you sit or lay down, you could have spinal stenosis. Other symptoms include tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness. Over time, wear and tear to the spine can result in narrowing of the small spinal canal that contains the spinal cord and nerve roots. This compression of the spinal canal causes a “pinching” of the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. We spoke with Simcha Weller, MD, a Neurosurgeon in the Spine Center at Tufts Medical Center, to help us understand what this degenerative and often very painful condition is, why it happens, how it feels, and treatments that might help.
