Our New England Eye Center (NEEC) ophthalmologists test for and treat all types of eye diseases and visual conditions, like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and ocular melanoma.
Keeping an eye on your ocular health
Did you know that we blink more than 28,000 times a day on average? Our ocular system works hard to give color to life’s most special moments. But your visual health can change in the blink of an eye — and your quality of life can suffer as a result.
Whether you need a new prescription for your eyeglasses or corrective surgery for a chronic condition, you can count on New England Eye Center to help you see clearly.
Conditions
We’re equipped to detect and diagnose the full range of conditions that affect your eyes, including:
Ocular melanoma
Ocular melanoma is a type of cancer that starts in the cells that produce pigment (color) in the eye. If left untreated, these cancerous cells can grow and spread to other parts of the body.
Neuro-ophthalmology
The nervous system and the ocular (visual) system are interconnected. Various parts of the brain and nervous system work together to help you see clearly. When one or more parts of that system aren’t working how they should, it can have a serious impact on your vision.
The neuro-ophthalmology team at the New England Eye Center specializes in managing all types of neurological disorders that affect your visual pathways.
Testing
When you walk through our doors, you can count on us to figure out the root cause of your pain, discomfort or vision impairment. We’ll conduct an ocular health assessment, which starts with a review of your health history and may include tests like:
- Color vision testing
- Dilation and fundus examination
- External examination
- Intraocular pressure measurement
- Pupil examination
- Refraction
- Slit lamp examination
- Visual acuity testing
- Visual field testing
Treatments
Once we understand your condition, we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. We also have a full-service optical shop, which means you can save time and choose frames that fit your style.
Cataract surgery
There are 2 surgical procedures that we use to treat cataracts: standard and complex cataract surgery. Both surgeries allow us to clear the "cloudy part" of your lens so that you can see clearly again.
Standard cataract surgery
Also known as phacoemulsification, standard cataract surgery is the most common approach for uncomplicated cataracts. This procedure involves breaking up the cloudy lens using ultrasound technology, removing the lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL). This is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll be back home to recover the same day as your procedure.
Complex cataract surgery
Complex cataract surgery requires more specialized equipment, expertise and planning. We choose this route for a variety of reasons, including:
- The cataract is advanced.
- You’re living with other eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration.
- You’ve experienced trauma or a significant eye injury.
Laser vision correction
Laser technology allows us to correct many vision problems quickly and without pain. We can choose from different procedures based on your specific needs. We may opt for one or more of these procedures depending on your condition:
- Lasik surgery
- Visian ICL
- Premium IOLs
- Phakic IOL
- Monovision
- Intacs and keratoconus
- PRK
- Dry eye surgery
Oculoplastic services
Oculoplastic surgery focuses on the structures around the eyes, including eyelids, brows, orbits, forehead and cheeks. Our ophthalmologists are trained in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, as well as minimally invasive treatments like Botox and facial fillers.
Ocular melanoma care
Receiving an ocular melanoma diagnosis can be a heavy weight to bear, but you don’t have to carry it alone. We’ll work with you, your loved ones and other members of your care team to map a treatment path that’s uniquely you.
Plaque brachytherapy, a special type of radiation therapy for the eyes, is the most common and effective method for treating ocular melanoma. We’re also one of a few health systems in the area that performs Gamma Knife surgery, a safe and painless way to remove tumors without making any incisions.
