Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when acid in the stomach enters the esophagus. This is believed to be caused by increased opening of the lower esophageal sphincter. This sphincter is located between the esophagus and the stomach. It normally stays closed but with swallowing this opens and allows food and drink to enter the stomach. However, if it opens at the wrong time, acid in the stomach may enter the esophagus and cause discomfort. Learn more >
