HIV AIDS

HIV/AIDS is a health condition that greatly weakens the body's immune system. If you have this condition, your body can't fight germs well.

HIV patients may experience an extreme weight loss, known as wasting, or they may gain a large amount of weight. Even subtle unintentional weight changes can be a concern. Some patients may notice unusual changes in their body shape as fat is lost or gained in a specific area. This condition known as lipodystrophy affects 30 to 50 percent of people infected with HIV. Additionally, HIV patients may have abnormal lipid profiles that could indicate a risk of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. These complications may be due to the HIV infection, the treatments for the disease, general lifestyle, or a combination of the three.
