If your GU tumor requires surgery, you understandably may be concerned about the discomfort and potential complications of traditional, or "open," procedures. Fortunately, our surgeons have extensive experience with minimally invasive surgical techniques. We use the latest laparoscopic and robot-assisted technology to minimize your pain, risk and recovery time.
During laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, doctors insert a camera and specialized surgical instruments through small incisions in your abdomen to take a tissue sample (biopsy) or perform more-complicated procedures.
Our advanced, robot-assisted da Vinci Surgical System gives our physicians enhanced visualization, dexterity and precision. As a result, we can perform delicate and complex surgery, such as removing all or part of a kidney, through incisions as small as the tip of your finger.
Effective treatment for complex GU cancers requires a team of experts working in close collaboration. The doctors of the Genitourinary Oncology Program meet weekly to coordinate care for patients. In addition, our nurses, dietitians, social workers and other support staff work with our physicians to integrate services and provide a comprehensive, individualized care plan.

Clinical care of genitourinary cancers with a special emphasis on prostate cancer, modeling bone metastases and experimental therapeutics in prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies
The urologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists in the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Tufts Medical Center are paving the way with research that charts new paths to discovery in a field where there still remains much to learn.
Our physicians not only have clinical expertise in prostate and other cancers, they direct clinical and translational research focused on better understanding how these cancers grow, spread and impact quality of life. For example, Dr. Carpinito's research is focused on finding new therapeutic strategies that improve both survival and quality of life for people with prostate and other urological cancer.
