Cancer Center

Social Work Services

The Tufts Cancer Center has dedicated full-time oncology social workers available to provide emotional and other support to both our patients and their families.

Our social workers serve as liaisons between our patients and their medical team. We offer a wide range of services including:

Consultation at time of diagnosis – Getting a cancer diagnosis is scary but you do not have to face it alone.  We help you understand what this diagnosis means for you and your family.

Emotional support – After your diagnosis, our social workers are here for you whenever you or your family needs support throughout your cancer journey. We help you cope with your diagnosis and emotionally prepare to fight this disease.

Connection with support groups – We help our patients and their families find support groups that may help them along their cancer journey like our family care giver group, breast cancer group and more. We help to form new groups as needs are recognized. We can also connect you with peer networks, community agencies and therapists.

Help accessing community resources – Our social workers are also a great tool for you to use to access the resources you may need throughout your time in our care. These resources may include:

  • Transportation assistance
  • Lodging
  • Food
  • Financial issues
  • Employment issues and questions about applying for disability

If you or a family member would like to speak with an oncology social worker at Tufts Medical Center, please call the Department of Social Work between 8:30-5pm Monday-Friday at 617-636-5136.
