Cardiac Surgery

Basic Science Research

The surgeons in the Division of Cardiac Surgery support and take part in laboratory research aimed at seeking solutions to the fundamental causes of heart disease.

Through their work in the Cardiovascular Surgery and Intervention Research Laboratory, Dr. Kapur has created models investigating the hemodynamics effects of various mechanical circulatory support systems. The CSRL is a state-of-the art, research lab with an operating room, hybrid room and catheterization lab capabilities.

Our doctors also participate in research conducted in the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI) in collaboration with Tufts University School of Medicine. Established in 1997, the MCRI is a group of gifted investigators and physician-scientists dedicated to the study of molecular mechanisms leading to human cardiovascular disease. It emphasizes the translation of knowledge obtained from the research bench to the bedside treatment of patients with cardiovascular disorders.
