Cardiac Surgery

Clinical Research

The doctors in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Tufts Medical Center are using innovative techniques and technologies to treat heart disease. In particular, our surgeons are currently examining new mechanical circulatory support and cardiac preservation technologies.

Tufts Medical Center, was the first and only center in New England to have participated in the HeartWare ADVANCE (Bridge-to-Transplant)  and HeartWare ENDURANCE (Destination Therapy) clinical trials. These national, multi-center trials investigated the safety and efficacy of the latest generation of ventricular assist devices.  We have also participated in the Transmedics PROCEED clinical trial, investigating a novel approach in organ preservation for heart transplantation.  In the near future, the surgeons at Tufts MC will be participating in other clinical trials investigating newer and less invasive surgical approaches.  We believe strongly that participating in these clinical trials fulfills Tufts Medical Center’s mission of providing state-of-art  care to patients and furthering medical and scientific knowledge.
