At the Valvular and Structural Heart Health Center at Tufts Medical Center, you will find the latest, advanced, minimally-invasive treatments for valvular and structural heart conditions. Many patients who have had minimally invasive procedures can drive, go to work or play golf within two weeks, versus the six-to eight-week recovery period with conventional, “open heart” surgery. Additionally, minimally invasive therapies can present benefits such as a shorter stay in the hospital, a quicker recovery, lower rates of infection and less blood loss. The number of alternatives to open heart surgery for repairing or replacing valves damaged by heart disease is growing continuously. For example, we can repair and replace mitral and aortic valves using the latest catheter-based procedures, and our capabilities include trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
At the Tufts MC Valve Program, we treat you by bringing together experts in clinical cardiology, cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine and cardiovascular imaging. Our physicians make care decisions as a team, combining their expertise to develop personalized treatment plans for every patient. Our team of experts includes national and international leaders in cardiology, with an extensive list of publications and “Top Doctor” awards. They are regularly involved with groundbreaking clinical trials, which can also provide additional treatment options for some patients. Our physicians also are involved in clinical research through the Predictive Analytics and Comparative Effectiveness (PACE) Center where they work to gather evidence that helps clinicians individualize care to meet each patient’s specific needs.
Your primary care physician and local cardiologist are considered key members of our treatment team. Every referring physician receives a phone call the day of the first consultation and is updated on your condition and progress regularly.
