The Dentistry Department at Tufts Medical Center, working together with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine provides dental care spanning oral and maxillofacial surgery, adult restorative and esthetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, oral pathology, periodontics, dental implants, orthodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics and oral and maxillofacial pain from experienced specialists in each field. Emergency services are provided by the department of dentistry ranging from dental pain, infections of the mouth, jaws and face, and traumatic injuries to the teeth, face and jaws. 

Our physician team includes Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, a staff dentist, a pediatric dentist and a maxillofacial prosthodontist.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers high quality care and post-doctoral training, and conducts patient-oriented research in a wide range of areas in the specialty. We provide diagnostic, surgical and adjunctive treatment for various diseases, injuries and defects of the oral and maxillofacial region, including:

  • Correction of facial skeletal deformities (disharmony of upper and lower jaws and teeth)
  • Treatment of facial and jaw injuries
  • Reconstruction of bony and/or soft tissue abnormalities of the facial bones and the jaws
  • Surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases
  • Diagnosis and treatment of  oral cancer, tumors in the jaws and salivary glands
  • Surgical treatment of cleft lip and palate
  • Surgical treatment of sleep apnea
  • Surgical removal of impacted teeth
  • Outpatient sedation and general anesthesia
  • Treatment of face, mouth and jaw infections

Advanced General Dentistry

The Advanced General Dentistry Service provides sophisticated dental treatments with expertise in meeting the needs of all patients, including those with advanced medical problems and intellectual disabilities with special needs.  The Advanced General Dentistry Service provides post-doctoral training as well as faculty staff that offers comprehensive dental care including:

  • Routine dental exams
  • Dental Cleanings
  • Dental restorations
  • Root Canals
  • Periodontal Surgery
  • Dentures
  • Dental Implant Restorations
  • Advanced Dental Rehabilitations
  • Consultants to Dental Specialty Services (Braces, Temporomandibular Dysfunction ‘TMD’)
  • Other special services include prostheses for patients with atrophic jaw bones and prosthetic reconstruction of patients missing segments of the jaws secondary to cancer surgery, trauma or congenital defects.

Pediatric Dentistry

The pediatric dentistry service provides comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care services for infants, children and adolescents in our outpatient clinic at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Routine dental procedures are provided in our eighteen-chair clinic. For patients who have difficulty undergoing dental procedures in the usual manner, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation in our clinic, and dental treatment under general anesthesia in the operating room at Tufts Medical Center.

In addition to routine care, we specialize in the management of patients with complex dental, medical, developmental, and behavioral issues such as:

  • Infants and young children with early childhood caries (i.e. bottle or nursing decay)
  • Patients with dental disorders such as ectodermal dysplasia, enamel hypoplasia, amelogenesis imperfecta, and dentinogenesis imperfecta
  • Patients with autism, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorder, Down syndrome, and other developmental and behavioral conditions
  • Patients with advanced medical problems and intellectual disabilities with special needs
