Dermatology Residency Program – Clinical Opportunities

The Dermatology Residency offers a variety of clinical learning opportunities including areas like surgery, laser and cosmetics, dermatopathology and pediatric dermatology.
General dermatology

General dermatology will be a focus of clinical rotations during all 3 years at Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) and the VA. Residents are exposed to general dermatology and specialty clinics during this time, including pediatric dermatology, blistering diseases, connective tissue diseases, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, hair loss, lasers and cosmetics and allergic contact dermatitis.

Surgery

First-year residents focus on the fundamentals of performing excisions at Tufts MC. Second and third-year residents perform excisions and assist in Mohs surgery during their VA rotation and at Tufts MC.

Inpatient consults

Second and third-year residents have a 2-month consult rotation which covers both adult and pediatric inpatient services at Tufts MC. Residents also get to experience the consult service at the West Roxbury VA.

Lasers and cosmetics

The following services are offered at Tufts MC:

Facial Rejuvenation:

  • Botox and Dysport injections for Crow's feet (around the eyes), frown and forehead lines
  • Facial volume replacement and wrinkle reduction using fillers like Belotero, Restylane Silk, Lyft, Juvaderm Ultra, Ultra Plus, Volbella, Vollure, Voluma, Sculptra
  • Facial tightening and skin resurfacing using fractional and traditional radiofrequency

Removal of Pigmentation, brown spots and “age spots” using:

  • Chemical peels
  • Laser treatment

Laser removal of redness/unwanted facial blood vessels or rosacea

Laser hair removal

Tattoo removal

Sclerotherapy of spider veins on the legs

Improvement of acne and scars using:

  • Chemical peels
  • Surgical removal of ice pick scars
  • Fractional non-ablative and ablative resurfacing
  • Fractional radiofrequency
  • Photodynamic therapy

Body contouring and fat reduction using:

  • Kybella for the neck
  • Radiofrequency treatments for the face and body

Residents will rotate through cosmetic clinics and participate in hands-on learning cosmetic sessions during all 3 years.

Dermatopathology

The VA provides a comprehensive dermatopathology curriculum (lectures and slides at a multi-headed scope) as part of the resident didactics.

Tufts MC and Inform DX provides a comprehensive dermatopathology curriculum (lectures and slides at multi-headed scope) as part of the resident didactics. 

Electives

Second and third-year residents have 2 weeks each year for electives. In the past, our residents have spent time in various clinical settings, both in Boston and away, studying and learning from different experts and including doing international work in Botswana.

Pediatric dermatology

Residents of all years participate in dedicated pediatric dermatology clinics at Tufts MC. Second-year residents have a pediatric inpatient consult rotation at Boston Children's Hospital. Residents also see pediatric consults from the Tufts ED and patients in the NICU during the consult rotation.
